- Mark Davison
Cambridge was formed in 1973 when the city of Galt merged with the towns of Preston and Hespeler. The first mayor of Cambridge was Claudette Miller, who at the time was one of Canada's only female mayors, and at the age of 35 the youngest mayor, in Canada. Tragedy struck the city on May 17, 1974 with flooding so severe it filled city streets with about 4 feet of water from the Grand River. Hundreds of businesses and homes were ruthlessly damaged. It is also worth noting that Cambridge is home to Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, which opened its Cambridge plant in 1988 and has since become one of the city's major employers.
